When requesting a reference, keep these in mind:

1. A Good Set of References

  • Determine people who are aware of and are likely to talk positively about skillset, experience, and character.

  • Prioritize managers, mentors, or clients.

  • Consider their network in the community

2. Request Permission

  • It would be polite and proper to talk to the person before listing as a reference.

  • Show gratitude should the reference agree to your request.

3. Provide Context

  • References may appreciate and idea of the following:
✅ What job the application is for
✅ What skills the employer expects
✅ Projects or achievements to focus on

4. Correct Contact Information

  • Check that the references' phone number, email, other relevant info are up to date.

  • Confirm availability to respond if contacted.

5. Follow Up

  • If they do give a reference, it may be good to inform them of the outcome of the application.

  • A “thank you” message goes a long way!

Strong references may help recruiters better understand experience and skillset, and provide context to a resume and cover letter.
